Flagstone
Flagstone is a natural stone that is cut to form a shallow flat slab. These pavers are usually derived of natural stone materials such as sandstone, slate or limestone because these types of natural materials are easily split and cut into slabs. Flagstone pavers are very popular among homeowners. Because they are one of the most attractive types of paving material, they are more suited to residential use. Their commercial use is not as popular due to their higher cost and complex laying processes.
Most commonly, flagstone is used for pathways and smaller patios. Natural flagstone is more expensive than alternative paver methods, due to its availability and the location it comes from. We use mostly Pennsylvania blue stone and Tennessee field or flagstone.
The sizes for flagstone are usually ‘organic” meaning it comes the way it was mined or broken at the quarry. Some stones can be cut in pre-determined sizes and thicknesses to give us the option for custom installs involving fireplaces, steps and columns. Their colors will always vary, and the most common color patterns are brown/tan, blue/gray, orange/brown.
Flagstone does not require sealing and gives a distinguished look that is sure to impress!
There are three different ways to lay flagstone:
1) Mortar set - this is where the base is prepared and a 3-4 inch flood base is poured onto the ground before each piece is set in place and leveled. After drying, the joints are filled with grout and cleaned. This is the most expensive method, but gives a very professional look.
2) The above method is done with polymeric sand replacing the grout.
3) Organically set - the stones are dropped onto a prepared dirt base. Grass, mulch or smaller stones are then swept in to give a contrasting look. This method can be done at a very affordable price.
